What is Coastal
Cleanup? Have you heard about this program? Are you aware of this program? If
Yes, Can this program help our community? That’s the questions that we need to
answer later.
Last
September 13, 2014, an event called International Coastal Cleanup was held and
participated by various schools; it is one of the largest international
volunteer events that happen every year. Lot of schools in Northern Mindanao
joined the said event, St Peter’s College also joined this event, and all of
the participants were gathered in St. Peter’s stage before they will move to
Brgy. Saray where they were assigned to clean, the cleanup starts around 7 to
7:30 o’clock in the morning. Lot of students participate in this so called
event for two (2) main reasons first they participate for the sake of their
grades and second for them to help or to volunteer cleaning those shorelines.
Students of St. Peter’s and citizens of Saray was unite by this event, we clean
the shorelines for atleast 2 hours and for that short time that we clean
Saray’s shoreline we gathered about 15 or more sack of trash or marine debris,
we know that trash cause innumerable impacts to people, water quality, marine
wildlife and the primary source of water pollution, but because of the help of
some agencies, citizens and us, nothing is impossible. This event was a great
success for us as a group and as an individual itself, it ended with a peaceful
mind and big smile.
Most
of the students are willing to go to that shoreline, before going there, I
really thought it would be a normal shoreline but we found out that it’s not
normal it is so crummy, miserable place and it has the unpleasant smell and it
likes you want to vomit or something, poops of animals are everywhere, trash
are everywhere like cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags and many more and I think
the water or sea in Saray was contaminated already, but one thing that interest
me most it was a traveling bag and a huge tire so I keep thinking why is that
there’s an object like that in there shorelines, I wonder if people discarded
it or that thing where carried away by flood. This event or activity serves us
a lesson to be a responsible and useful individual in the society, it taught us
to be more mature and to open our minds on what’s going on to our community,
also it gives us a knowledge on how trash affect our ocean, damage marine lives
and us.
Therefore,
being responsible is just not enough but we need to respect our nature, we need
to protect it and we need to cooperate and volunteer in any activity that
tackles about environment, thus we should listen and do action that can help
the environment even in the simplest way, that’s the reason why International
Coastal Cleanup was implemented for us to be able to promote Clean and Green
surroundings, hence it is not just ordinary activity but by the help of this
event we can overcome the difficulties in dealing with the garbage in
shorelines and also because of it we can save lot of marine lives, Yes we’re
just only human that made a mistakes but we need also to think that they are
also a living things that needs respect and help, without them we are nothing,
we will never exist in this world, we need to use our knowledge not just for
our own sake but for everyone’s betterment.
